Reviewed: Kid Cudi's "Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager"

Kid Cudi’s new album is the sequel to “Man on the Moon: The End of Day.” “The End of Day” is the first of the “Man on the Moon” trilogy. The first album tells a story of a protagonist falling asleep and experiencing a lucid dream. In this dream, this character witnesses Kid Cudi’s visions and his rise to fame. At the end of the album, he wake up and gain the courage to be genuine and candid. Overall, “The End of Day” portrays Kid Cudi’s struggles and fears, and his rise above them. In the beginning of “The Legend of Mr. Rager,” the protagonist starts out on top of the world, but plunges into a trip. In this trip, it becomes dark, which reflects Kid Cudi’s period of heavy drug use. This darkness seems to awaken the demon within him, and transforms into the “rager”. The main character later transforms back to his original self, and learns from his experiences. Overall, “The Legend of Mr. Rager” portrays Kid Cudi’s loneliness, elated highs, and inner maniac. However, through all of Kid Cudi’s music, he evokes a message of embracing our differences and pushing our creativity to the limits. This message is executed flawlessly by him.

Compared to the previous album and mixtapes, “The Legend of Mr. Rager” is completely different. It seems to have a darker sense without being depressive. However, every song is exquisitely melodic and captivating. It is an album that many people can easily vibe to, without being party music. Kid Cudi has a talent to create unique, unparallel talent to create amazing beats and abstract lyrics. He is truly an artist that is insurmountable. Kid Cudi has never been a conformist, thus he expresses his differences like no one else. He is always striving to produce something that has never been done before and that’s exactly what he does with “Man on the Moon: The Legend of Mr. Rager.”
There is not a specific genre that Kid Cudi’s music pertains to. He incorporates multiple genres and almost creates new ones. There is no other artist as original and creative as Kid Cudi. Every set of lyrics flows perfectly with the beats, thus creating a harmonious album. There is no flaw in the sound of the entire album. Every song sounds superbly ingenious. The only downside to this album is the content in his lyrics. It seems to have the repetitive subject of his drug habits on quite a few songs. Those include “Marijuana”, “Ashin’ Kusher”, “Mojo So Dope”, “Wild’n Cuz I’m Young”, and “Don’t Play This Song.” Even though he often talks about his drug habits; Kid Cudi has a deeper message which seems to go unnoticed most of the time. Kid Cudi’s new album has no other faults besides the recurrent lyrics. So if you want to hear a new, expressive, genuine artist, look no further than Kid Cudi.

Matt & Kim - Sidewalks * Album Review*

Debuting at #3 on the Top 10 iTunes Albums, Matt & Kim's new album, Sidewalks, was a great opening day success. This is the indie/alternative duo's third album since they started the band in 2006.

To be brutally honest, I really liked this album, but it did take some time to get used to some of their new sounds.  It's quite a bit different than their previous two collections, 2006's self-titled album Matt & Kim, and 2009's Grand.  The new album has really toned down the old dace punk sounds they're known for, and have moved onto a new hip-hop based tone.  Sidewalks used a lot more backbeats instead of just drums and synths.  Despite the changes they have made, the same typical Matt & Kim energy and charisma is still there.  Some of the old, raw punk sounds that you could find on Grand are faintly found on, mainly, the last three tracks of the CD: "Wires," a remake of their 2006 song "Silver Tiles," and "Ice Melts."  Many Matt & Kim fans may have a hard time adjusting to Sidewalks.  Overall, the new sounds that they produced are still different from most artists, but I don't feel as though Sidewalks set them above any standards fans had for this album.
